from what i can see the only issue here will be the truck traffic and perhaps the property values surrounding the area. I'm not sure if any developers have sold anything yet in that area, those people would def be upset.

what power does the town/region have to restrict truck traffic to certain times and roads? This would be a possible way of sticking it to them. No trucks after 6pm on any roads heading north through town etc.

anyone know?

Brittania is a regional road, so it may not be possible... You can do it with Savoline, Main St etc but Brittania and Tremaine are not going to be an easy one or near impossible...

The people who live near tracks on HVE and HVOTP may be affected by the increased traffic and noise from this intermodal facility. Those who have bought in the new hawthorne south village (britannia and bronte) may also be affected.

Obviously this is all speculation as we aren't sure on the specifics of the plan yet, but I think some existing home owners and future residents could be adversely impacted. I expect to be impacted as I use Hwy 25 for my commute every day.

Thanks for the post, John. Curious to hear your thoughts and ideas as well.

I'm still waiting for the official announcement on Thursday morning to get more information and to have an opportunity to get some questions answered, but as of right now it's difficult to come up with a benefit to the residents that I can get behind. It's going to be loud, busy, ugly, and in the way. CN's plans are in conflict with the vision of the town, and they will certainly see a lot of resistance across the Town and the Region. I'm looking forward to seeing what happens on Thursday and will keep everyone posted.

Edit: The main issue that I have is the location of the proposed facility. There are more appropriate areas to create this facility within a planned industrial area of the town. While this particular location may be perfect for CN and their strategy, it is far from perfect for everyone else.

CN put out their press release today.

One thing I'm not seeing is how large would this facility be relative to the Brampton one?
Also, looking again at that map, it appears the bulk of the land is behind the landfill. There's worse locations. I can't comment on noise except one would expect train traffic to increase I'm sure. Would I want to live next to it? Nope - same as I wouldn't want to live next to the main line as it is right now.
Could an intermodal yard be a potential transportation asset for attracting non-DC businesses? Maybe but even CN admits much of the spin-off businesses are in the low pay, low employment per acre DC businesses we lament are taking up our current industrial park.

my question is why do not they build it in the north of 401? Can they switch the land with the owner who own that land in the north?

The article states 1000 direct and indirect jobs will result from this station.

I wonder how many of those jobs are for truck drivers...

I hate ambiguous jobs creation statements like this article, if you are creating real direct jobs for he community, then state it clearly.

I was musing the same thing. I'm not sure there's enough linear space north of the 401 but if the Region/town could re-route 5th side road maybe - assuming the landowner would be ammendable - or CN for that matter. At least it would support existing DC (including the ill-fated Target warehouse!), would have better highway access via James Snow and would be in an existing industrial area.

When did truck driving stop being a job?

Never said it did, I am just wondering what type of jobs this will bring to the community.

There is a difference between direct jobs for the community and indirect transient work.

Just to keep the peace I've deleted 21 post in this thread I am calling "off topic", yes someone complained. If anyone really wants to go all out on the political go to the hornets nest but them again I've heard it is listed as a target in bill C 51. :D

PS I've left the "Cookie Cutter" parts alone.

Just because someone complains doesn't mean you have to comply. This is a private forum, not owned by the city or anything like it. There really wasn't anything in this thread that needed to be deleted.

The political sh*t was definitely off topic, 30% of the total posts. Also I did it to stop the bashing of one member who has difficulty expressing himself in written English. It's not just kids who get carried away with bullying.

Not to continue off topic, but that's a bit of a case of the pot calling the kettle black between them.

For anyone interested, there is a petition started by Robert Duvall at:

And another from Zeeshan Hamid at:

You can read the official CN release at http://johnp.ca/CN to learn more.

You're right, the one being picked on has certainly stuck his foot in his mouth a few times. Most of us are guilty of that too.
