So my wife just noticed that our freezer is -14 and the fridge is 67. It's one of those bottom freezer models. I can hear it running but it does not seem to be passing air to the fridge section. This thing got blown by lightning about 2 years ago and we replaced the compressor and the motherboard. It's never been quite the same since but it has always worked. Anyone know a good repair person that can come on short notice for a reasonable price? Or should we just scrap it? |

Hi mark, I have a GE Profile bottom freezer left from the previous owners, which runs into the same issue as yours sporadically. After accessing the cooling system (which is easy enough), i found that the evaporator fan was stuck due to an ice buildup in the condensate drain tube which backed up and froze the fan. There could be several reasons why this may be happening... I personally find that this usually happens when the wife puts a warm pot on the bottom shelf of the fridge, although checking online points to other reasons. You will also want to ensure you are vacuuming the coils at the back of the fridge. Anyhow, you can access the fan by pulling out the bottom few shelves and prying (carefully) the plastic cover and checking the issue. Make sure you unplug the fridge first. If you find that there has been some ice buildup, you can start defrosting it with some boiling water, and if youre careful, start chipping away some of the ice. Have a bucket and a sponge in hand too, to clear away the water. Be sure you dont puncture anything though! Once the area has been cleared out, you also want to be sure the condensate drain tube is clear, so pour some more boiling water through and ensure it drains out. You also want to check that the water that has drained through hasnt spilled over the reservoir in the back. If so, be sure to wipe it down. You could probably find more answers by checking online. We used Appliance Depot to fix our fridge last year. They were very pleasant to deal with. I believe there is a thread around here somewhere mentioning them. They're in Milton as well, on Bronte. |

Dave was just here and Mike you were completely correct. Once he tore the back wall of the freezer off the entire area under there which was like fan coils were completely caked with ice. We now have to wait for it to defrost and then he has to change a thermostat part so that it does not happen again. Glad we have a freezer in our garage so at least the frozen stuff is ok. So much for about $150 worth of vegatables and condiments!! |

Just got the final go ahead from Dave to start using our fridge again. You guys were right, Dave was awesome. Great service, great information, fixed it quickly and I don't need another mortgage to pay the bill. Would definitely recommend Appliance Depot for any appliance related service. |
