Hey,

I live in one of those three story town homes with people on either side and behind (so no backyard).
If you are familiar with these units, the rain drainage from the roof comes out between the garage doors (I have a shared driveway) and pours directly down the driveway.

With summer approaching, well hopefully, I was tempting putting in a rain barrel to catch the rain water.

Questions:
- Anyone have experience using one? Any pitfalls / gotchas?
- Anyone see any issues putting one in that style of unit? (of course will check if there is enough room to even place one)

Why do it? Well, figured why not if it saves a bit on watering the grass etc.

If you don't mind a breeding ground for mosquitos, great idea.

hmmmm......I think rain barrel's are an eyesore. On a small property such as those types of townhouses it will look hideous. If they are placed on large properties or homes that have a side or backyard, then fine. But the front of the house is not a place for a barrel. I don't think it brings any curb appeal to the home.

Fair enough
Was looking more at the ones like
http://www.canadiantire.ca/AST/browse/2 ... ?locale=en
Were they look like planter pots vs the plastic black ones.

For the mosquitos, apparently they come with mosquito netting that resolves that issue really well.
Also, the one above is a closed system so no open water pooling up.

My other thought, not sure if possible yet, if it can be diverted from the gutter so I don't have to have it at the exact front where the downspout is. If the barrel looks somewhat nice (you can also get ones that look like old fashion barrels with a planter on top), wondering if it could be embedded in some front garden plot off the porch, hidden within shrubs etc.

Hey Chris,
I like your idea of diverting the water and embedding it with shrubs. If that is possible, then I would take that route.

True, but better rain barrels will have a screen that prevents the entry of these critters to lay their eggs.

There are so many different styles to pick from now, that you can easily incorporate rain barrels into your landscapes designs, make them a feature in your garden.

Hey OP, don't waste your money on the ugly Canadian Tire you linked to for $159. The region / or town, offers a great deal on rain barrels every spring for a low low price. You should check when that is offered.

Relax a little... WoW!

I was just joking with you! You know... haha

You said the flowerpot rain barrels look like tombstones... therefore I was thinking ink blot was funny.

Did you at least enjoy the "personality quiz" I posted? It is just a "fun" quiz!

The quiz said I had an adult film star personality

Well, I did take offense to what you wrote. But if you say it was a joke... Then I'm sorry. friends? lol
Just look at the pic of the black barrel you attached. All that's missing on it is gold writing "in loving memory" . The pic with the white one is not bad because it looks more like a pillar.
I'm a city girl. So, I'm kind of new to rain barrels.

:) I really didn't mean to offend you, Sorry that I did. I guess is the problem with writing on boards, you can't see the smile or giggle behind the typing.
I just thought you comment about the tombstone was funny. How did you find a tombstone out of that photo! It looks like a pedestal with flowers on top to me.
Anyhow truths - friends? For-sure
But try the quiz, it's fun. Can't say I've ever really seen ink blots except for on TV shows.
