In the same twitter post....

"The location identified is a school crossing guard location. Pedestrians do not have the right-of-way at this type of crossing unless a crossing guard is present and displaying a stop sign."

My kid and I have issues crossing here as well. He's not the fastest (he's 3), and we've had people intentionally speed up as we are actually in the crossing.

If that is the case a bus stopping might pose a greater danger, as confused idiots think it’s a bus stop or something and pass the bus which is now creating a huge blind spot for our precious children.

I wonder why there has never been any pedestrian etiquette when it comes to crosswalks. Why for example should it not be a standard social conduct to for example hold your arm out until vehicles have stopped. The other day I was hesitant and slowed down as I went through a crosswalk where people were just standing and talking at the side of the road where there was a crosswalk.

Regardless - pedestrians obviously need to be careful.

Where the hell is Elmer the safety elephant when you need him.

Actually there was pedestrian etiquette back in the late 50's when crosswalks started, you point across the street, the problem motorist had was parents told the kids to wait till the cars had stopped before crossing. This had the kid waiting till a car came along and stopped, now they had to wait for a car coming other way to stop, by then the first car was pissed and just drove though as the kid was still standing there with arm out meaning he had to wait for another car to come and stop. Divers didn't take kindly to these crosswalks b/c some (not me) would point wait for cars to stop then turn and walk the other way.

As for Elmer he and Smoky the Bear retired decades ago.

Elmer is alive and well, and lives at a place called the Safety Village. This is a place where kids in kindergarten and grade 2 go to learn about safety in a hands on environment. They are also challenged to find our friend Elmer at every ‘station.’ My kid is SOOOO smart he found him at every one!

Is hands on learning better than colouring books? Maybe, maybe not. Ultimately parents just need to go outside with their kids and show them how the world works.

You are correct.
You only have to stop if a crossing guard is present or if it is one of the special crosswalks.

What is a "special crosswalk"?

The ones that explicitly say vehicles must stop, as opposed to just painted lines on the road. Of course, I wouldn't trust the drivers in this town to stop for anyone, ever. People here are nuts.
