so I noticed a little bit of water in my basement, not a lot just some drips which appear to be coming from this blackpipe which is underneath the main floor bathroom.

No real leaks I can see and the plywood around it doesn't appear damp. Is it just the condendation dripping down? If not what is the purpose of the pipe for? water leak in the bathroom?

It's unusual to have a open black ABS pipe like that. That type of pipe is typically used for plumbing drainage and venting. Could it be a conduit to the attic ??,,,,, but lighter gage white central vacuum pipe is usually used for that ? Lots of homes have conduits from basements to attics so that wires can be easily routed to the attic.

If it is a conduit to the attic then from the attic hatch you may see the other end of it.

What ever it is - put a cap on it.

If it is part of the plumbing system then the cap will need to be glued on with ABS glue. If it is the bottom end of a conduit to the attic then the cap can be taped on or any other effective cap can be used.

Hi Andy,

I do have a white conduit pipe in another part of the basement that does go up to the attic for wiring purposes.

I'm still not sure what the purpose of this pipe is for. If I put a cap on it wouldn't it just cause the water to build up?

What would be the best trades person to look at this, a plumber?

tks

I guess a plumber,,,,,

Maybe it is part of the basement bathroom rough-in to be used as a vent for the plumbing system. You know,,,, to tie it in to the (pipe) plumbing stack sticking out of the roof so that everything can drain properly.

Can't say really, I have no idea if your basement is finished, how old the house is, etc.

Mastro.D Plumbing just came to take a look, said its condensation coming from the vent pipe. Just need to cap it off like you suggested.

Thanks again for your help as always.

I once found a hairline crack in a black abs drain pipe. It would leak slowly onto my insulation. It was really hard to see with the naked eye. I was able to locate it by having someone drain several gallons of water down that pipe while I watched the pipe. Replaced the entire pipe from between its 2 joints. Hopefully yours is just condensation
