Hello, Has anyone had to repair or replace the square wooden pickets typical on many porches? See the attached photo. Do you know where pickets can be bought. Is it difficult to do it yourself? Thank you, Tony

When the interlocking brick work was done on the porch the bottom of the guardrails and columns was then too low and became and exposed to moisture and has likely started to rot. If it was my porch I would remove the guardrails, repair the bottoms of the porch columns, make new guardrails, and then install them. It is quite a bit of work to do this properly. The other option is to have a company install new vinyl rails. |

I'm not sure how handy you are but I went and rebuilt them myself. It's constructed with a 2 x 6 on the top and bottom, then a 2 x 4 in between the spindles and top and bottom plate. The spindles are just 2x2 but capped with a 1 x 2. I used pressure treated wood and caulked all the joints before priming and then painting. I'm expecting my replacement spindles will outlive me. As HHI says, you'll want to leave a bigger gap above the interlocking bricks. |

Ripped mine out and went with vinyl. No more painting or rot. |
