Anyone know the costs associated with cancelling the rental contract? Seeing how rental prices for water heaters are reaching around $50/month its becoming more and more attractive to own. Buying out the tankless water heater through enercare is still pricey at around $3000-4000.

Just looking at some quick numbers (assuming tankless water heater)
-Exiting a rental TWH contract $200-300? (im taking a wild guess, I have no clue)
-New TWH $1700 (http://www.amazon.ca/Rinnai-RUC98iN-Tankless-Concentric-Installation/dp/B00OBVKBB2/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1453045014&sr=8-1&keywords=rinnai+tankless+water+heater)
-Removal of rental and install of new TWH $600-700 maybe?

So around $2700? Lets just say 3000 total it would take about 5 years to break even.

We just bought a Shelburne today on Leger Way. The sales person said that the water heater rental is going to be $39.99 and is going to be a tankless system. I forgot the company of the water tank rental but he said it isn't reliance. I think is was something starting with the letter "s".

It's Reliance for the rentals in HSV Phase 1. A Rinnai tankless unit from what I remember.

so is anyone considering purchasing a unit outright? I'm possibly considering it. Wondering if we should ask one of the businesses here to get a group buy going like for the A/Cs

I am also considering this. In the contract with mattamy it says an agreement will be made between the purchaser and the hot water tank rental company. Im just not sure how easy it is trying to get out of the contract with the hot water tank rental company. If they are charging $50/month to rent, to me its a no brainer to get out.

I am guessing the rental charges will be between $45-$50. I have a combo system that has the HWT connected to the furnace. Reliance increased my monthly rental by $4/mnth after 3 years and my rental is almost $47/month. It will go up to $50/mnth in the next few years.Reliance gave me two months free at the beginning when I inquired about the buyout option. I should have cancelled the rental earlier, but won't stick with the rental this time. I like the tankless option but I want to get it sized based on my requirements. The builders will installed a standard BTU capacity that may be good for 2 showers at a time. no point going with the rental unit.

Thanks wchung! Do you know which Rinnai model it is? I can't see the number. I got a quote for the R75 by one of the contractors in milton for $3200 installed + hst (warranty, labour included). That seems considerably high considering on amazon it is selling for approximately $1,400.

wow $3200 is alot more then I expected. It costs $3200 to buyout an R75 from Enercare. Might aswell just buy it out.

A buddy finished building a house last summer (just a one off - not a mass build) and he was telling me a good quality, high efficiency, Japanese made tankless unit is $3000-$4000 with install. I'm happy to see tankless, just wish we had the option to choose (from Mattamy) if it was a rental or owned.

Hi all,
Wanted to reopen this thread and find out what owners of tankless water heaters think so far? I'm considering switching over, not so much for energy savings but because I'm tired of running out of hot water. I think I saw a comment that good units typically go for $3k-$4k, but I'm seeing one at Lowes for $1599 - GSW powered by Takagi (which is apparently one of the better ones?) And another one for $1199, same manufacturer. Not sure what the price difference would be but I'm looking into it.

I'm not seeing much of an issue in terms of running out of hot water, granted my kids aren't old enough yet to fully utilize the system yet. The only drawback I find is that it takes a little while to get the hot water coming thru the tap in the beginning, otherwise I don't have any issues. I saw tankless units on amazon for like $1,300 but that doesn't come with any installation or any sort of service warranty.

Nortiz brand Tankless water heaters are better ones I've heard. I plan to change the Reliance installed 'Rinnai' make after closing.
