Are there any individuals in this industry that can chime in on what type of water heater tank is better? I am having a dilemma deciding whether I should purchase the tankless or conventional tank. Tankless has the advantage of being small and not taking up much space, but it seems there are mixed reviews abut the money savings, more maintenance, cold and hot water coming out at the same time and a delay in getting hot water in the tap. Any pros in the field that have seen more issues with one versus the other?

Gas tankless water heaters , which use high-powered burners to quickly heat water as it runs through a heat exchanger, are 22 percent more energy efficient on average than the gas-fired storage-tank models. That translates into a savings which doesn't justify the installation of tankless water heater (may be $100/year depending on usage and load). But because the tankless water heater cost much more than storage water heaters, it can take up to years to break even—longer than the 10-year life of many models.

just found out that Mattamy is installing tankless water heaters in our phase, and assume for all other phases as well.

What? I don't remember that in the paperwork...is it still a rental through reliance? Do you recall the brand?

Funnyman82,
I'm Phase 6, and the rental is through National Home Service, which I've read was bought out be Reliance. I was told it was a tankless, and I think they said it was about $50.00 / month. It says it on the "Your New Home - What To Expect" on the second page it, just doesn't have what type of water tank and the cost. That's if your purchase agreement is the same as mine.

renting a tankless is a waste of money - they are doing it because they make a HECK of a lot more from you. Instead of $30 a month forever, they bill you $50 a month forever.

Tankless systems are becoming cheaper and cheaper.

The savings you will see on tankless is EXTREMELY small - It won't cover the difference between a regular heater and tankless heater rental.

I was told by Stacey some time ago that apparently the provider of the water tank will be through Cricket home heating services.

If you have a choice, in an ideal world - get a rented tank heater and replace it yourself down the road with a better quality tank or tankless if you prefer. These companies don't put the higher quality devices in your home when you are renting them. I would not buy them outright from them. I'd get an installer that knows what they are doing and replace it with a better quality device. I continue to rent my heater as I've just been too lazy to change out the tank. Rental for me has worked out as I've had them come out on 3 occasions to replace/fix parts on it that amounted to about $1000, but normally owning will work out better.

The cost savings in Canada simply don't add up. Tankless is Europe is common place for a couple of reasons -space and cost.

Heard that Takagi tankless heater and Rinnai brand has a good rating. Don't know what Mattamy will give us.

Likely the best thing would be to call them directly.

It won't be a quality brand though. Usually the cheapest they can get.
