...Recently the ward boundaries in Milton have been changed becoming effective for the 2010-2014 term of council. This isn’t the first time I have run into people not knowing where ward 6 or any ward for that matter. Outside the original news story about the changes, nothing has been said since about the changes by the Town of Milton. I think the Town of Milton staff needs to do a better job in educating voters on the changes as much as possible. Before you know it, election time will be here and people will be scrambling to figure out where they are and how to vote...

I'm stealing a moment for some shameless self-promotion. I've done a blog entry where I go through the new boundaries, listing candidates and current councillors. Check it out at: Milton Views
Moment of shameless self-promotion over.

P.S: Thanks for the help Zeeshan

Mike, I am also concerned about the low voter turnout and the seeming lack of interest of Council to fix it.

I understand that staff recommended some 2010 budget for an "election awareness" program but Council did not approve it. There are many small actions that can be taken at little cost and I believe staff will do what they can.

The Champion also seems to be trying to help with the features on candidates so early in the campaign. I hope they continue.

My Thursday April 1 Champion package included a handbook, published by the Champion, called LINK 2010. It is primarily an index of Milton sevices, schools, organizations, etc. but has a feature story on the 2010 election and the new ward boundaries. This booklet is worth rescuing from the Blue Box and saving for reference.

Meanwhile, thanks for your efforts in getting the attention of potential voters.

Thanks Garlis.

As I mentioned before, I was out knocking on doors this past week and I found a lot of people who dont know the ward they live in, they didnt know about the changes and sadly...again...they dont know who their councillors are.

Its going to be a challenge for us candidates to get the message out there about the new election date, the wards and how it works and who they can vote for.

I thought that the "election awareness" program was approved, but I guess it hasnt. It was a small amount if I remember that would go far to use local media and town resources to get the word out about the changes.

Its still early but its an uphill battle to raise awareness.
