CogecoTV has donated $200,000 to arts centre for naming rights to now Cogeco Escarpment Hall :-)

Every little bit helps the town offset future arts centre operating costs!

Ka-Ching!

Yes! Plus the retirement speeches for Lee, Day & Schau

It was the last council meeting before the new council will meet post election.

10 days left before V-day ;-)

lipstick on a pig makes it worse.

are we sure "donation" is the right word to use here? would they have "donated" $200,000 if they didn't get the name???

I see your point. But it is how both the media and the fund-raising campaign refers to it.

I'm probably about to get a few negative karma points for this... but isn't the latter stages of an election campaign the wrong time to ask people for money for the arts?

Just a thought...

Was he asking? I thought the links were just supporting reference for the media & campaign use of the term "donation".

i see what you're saying , Laura, although i dont think any of the candidates are particularly involved. what I keep hearing is that some people are upset because they think the money we are spending on this "toy"(their word not mine) should be allocated to the hospital expansion. truth is, if their wasn't a stimulus package i'm not sure this Arts centre would have been built in the first place. I, for one, think it's gonna be a place we are all very proud of...

I agree Brian. People may also be missing the fact that this will offset operating costs for these facilities. I'm sure once the hospital expansion is approved and the hospital foundation ramps up it's fundraising efforts that it will recieve ample corporate and private donation support and this does not detract from it.

Who is making sure its being used to offset the yearly costs of running the facility?

Like are we sure an equal potion is set aside every year to help fund the costs of running the facility, or is it possible the money may be used to order in a fancy art exhibit 1 year.

does anybody know who that person is?

One of the impacts on next years tax estimate revealed by the Budget Call Report was funding growth related costs such as the Arts centre. These donations would appear to offset those. While I personally would have preferred the donations to be earmarked for Hospital Expansion I can't really object since I suggested selling naming rights both on this Forum and at Council. Let's take it from wherever we can whenever we can providing we haven't sold our soul. :)
