Hi,
I have an appointment at the design centre soon and am not sure if its worth to have over the stove microwave. Its costing over $1000 (over 600 for microwave hood and over 300 to shorten cabinet above the stove). I think they are charging a lot. Does anyone know if we can get it done much cheaper from somewhere else? Also I have been told that microwave hood fans are not as effective as others. Our kitchen is small so thought of doing it but now am not sure. Any input will be appreciated. Thanks

Glad you asked... I have been thinking about the same but wasn't sure of cost. Maybe you could have them shorten the cabinets and then get the microwave hood fan after you move in?

Would love to hear thoughts on this...

Hello, we purchased the stainless steel microwave over the stove at our Design Appointment and it cost us $777.

The cost for shortening the cabinets is only if you are not getting the microwave through Mattamy. I chose to install my own microwave after closing therefore only chose to shorten the cabinets because I am looking for a microwave with a convection grill incorporated in it and the Mattamy supplied did not.

However be aware if you shorten the cabinets that the standard black or white hood fan will still be installed hardwired...therefore you will need to retrofit an outlet for your over the range microwave when you install it.

I went to shop appliances at Appliance Canada, and they themselves suggested it would be better to take the hood microwave from Mattamy. So I got mine from Mattamy for $777.

Otherwise you will pay Mattamy $300-400 to shorten cabinets, $300-400 for the microwave and another $150-200 to get it installed.

Oh! I thought we also have to pay to shorten the cabinets along with hood cost. I also thought 777 does not include microwave but just the microwave hood fan lol! Ok then it turns out to be a good deal. Only one more thing...are microwave hood fans as efficient as over the range hood fans Someone told me it doesnt do much other than to circulate air. I am thinking there is got to be good quality ones that do the same job and I plan to ask Mattamy which one they are offering.

I didn't get a firm answer, but the suggestion was it might be Whirlpool

I don't think you will ever find a microwave combo that will be effective as a hood fan alone. There are 2 main reasons for this

1) the combos don't have high cfm output
2) the position of the fan intakes are very close to the back wall. They are not in a good position above the main burners. Also the flat bottom does not funnel the air into the intakes.

you are basically sacrificing venting for the ability to have more counter space.

Precisely, which is why we're going to have the microwave built into our island.
Initially we wanted the Grande kitchen package but its not available for the alternate kitchen layout.
Our DC mentioned that if we liked that built-in oven look that the best she can do is have the microwave built into the island.
At first it seemed odd as I'd never seen that before but after Googling it I think it looks great!
We have our appointment in 2 weeks so I'll fill you in on how it goes!
