The cost is about $2000 which including upgrading rails/pickets on the railing (instead of knee wall).
Is this worth the cost or better to do it after?

In my opinion, this should be done through the builder. I think it's a money maker for them as most people (based on people I know and houses I see on MLS) opt for railings instead of a kneewall but I imagine this as being a huge hassle and highly inconvenient to do after. Probably not worth the saving (if any at all!).

Removing the kneewall is a very good upgrade.
It makes the upstairs hallway a bit more airy and less blocked in.

I would like to remove any knee walls on my stairs as well. I have not yet had my design appointment but I'll be going next month. I'm already paying 4000 to convert the stairs from carpet to hardwood. And an extra 225$ to change the round posts to square.
What did other people pay to remove their knees walls ?

Crazyfurniture, are your stairs not already hardwood? I thought that was a standard in all the homes? Or is that only for certain lots?
I had two lengths of kneewall removed and it was about $2600 for both sections. This was to change it to the square wood pickets as well.
This was the first upgrade on my list

I am sorry I was unclear.

Yes I agree that knee-wall has to go.

But I was wondering if I should upgrade wood to metal pickets and handrail.
This is where the cost is $2000

Thanks!

I'm not sure how much replacing a kneewall would cost after close, but I feel if you want that upgrade, I think it's better to do it through the builder, just for convenience and to ensure everything matches (same wood/stain as the rest of the stairs). Regarding metal pickets... maybe you could check out home depot or another place the sells metal pickets and price out how many you'd need? $2000 might actually be a good price, plus the convenience of having it done when you move in.

We're actually planning to keep our kneewall due to the cost. Our kneewall will be quite small (looks to be less than 3 feet), so I don't feel changing the kneewall to pickets will make much of an impact on the overall look of our hallway. We will inquire about the price at our DC appt. just to be sure, but I've heard from other Trenton owners the cost is about $1,200 which is quite a lot of money for just a few pickets. For a home with a different layout, I agree it can make a big difference and really open up the space.

I would still recommend getting it done from the builder. Imagine then tearing through perfectly fine wooden pickets and then reinstalling the metal ones. Too much hassle.
