Something else I have been doing lately is installing intercoms at your front door.

It's a very handy option since when someone presses the button on the intercom, it rings your telephone inside your house where you can answer it and have a 2-way conversation with the person at the front door (who presumably is trying to set you up with a fixed rate natural gas contract)

Here's a picture of one that I installed last week for an old house in somewhat bad area of Toronto.

The home owner regularly had guests drop in and wanted to make sure whomever came to the door was supposed to be there.

There are also models with cameras so you can talk and SEE them too.

Over the Christmas holidays I worked on several basement finishings.

When a basement renovation is done, there are number of things to consider for low-voltage:

* Move wiring for any existing TV, telephone and network connections for the first/second floor so the basement can be framed in. This includes cleaning up wiring messes.

* Re-route existing central vac, or pipe an unfinished central vac out to the garage so it could be used later.

* Add additional TV, telephone and network connections to the basement

* Design a theatre space for sitting down and watching movies to get the best placement for sound and video. Then wire it all up to achieve current goals and prepare for future ones.

* Do any additional alarm wiring for doors and motions.

These are all things that I do and do regularly.

If you are planning to finish your basement, please contact me to help you get the most out of your basement for all of your audio and video needs.

Can you let me know the cost of mounting a 52" television above a fireplace? An outlet has already been installed, but no conduit for running additional cables.

Thanks

I do a lot more than just mount TVs.

I do surround sound systems. Great to knock your socks off!

I do whole house audio systems. Great for entertaining!

I do central vacuum systems. Great for cleaning!

I do camera systems and intercoms. Great for keeping an eye on things!

I do anything and everything with electronics in your home.

You can supply your own and have us install it.

Or I can supply everything from idea to install and make it all work right for you. I only use quality equipment, many things you cannot get at the big box stores.

For details on what we do and how we can do it for you, contact us directly:

Because I get asked this a lot, I've written a simple article to go over the basics of any sort of technology that you would/should get installed in your home during construction.

I'll be periodically writing articles on simular topics and you can get updated by Twitter whenever these come out.

Hi there;

I'm actually hiring as I have many large projects coming up and need some assistance with them.

I am looking for someone who is available during the summer, has a clean driving record, knows what tools are what, has no issues working on a construction site, and has some technical ability.

It's a pretty neat job and they would learn a lot about audio, video, cabling, construction, home theatres, and a lot lot more.

Email a resume directly to me, greg AT phand.ca with the subject line "Custom Installer Apprentice"

Thanks!

Where has Greg been?

This is a question I've been asked a few times in the last couple of months.

I currently work for a few home builders, and one of them right now is building a line of luxury town homes in Oakville.

Let me show you:

Image

Some of the features that we are installing in these homes:

- TV wiring
- Telephone wiring
- Data wiring
- Alarm systems with monitoring
- Structured wiring panels to keep all the wiring nice and neat
- Whole house audio systems with speakers throughout the home both inside and out
- Data networking hardware, including setting up the internet connections and networking
- Home automation systems to control much of the technology in the home easily and automatically using touchpanels and keypads
- Lighting control, lights that will turn on and off automatically to set the scene
- LED lighting for stairways that come on automatically with pressure sensitive steps
- Home theatre speaker supply and installation including AV Receivers and BluRay players
- Mounting of TVs throughout the home
- Cameras to watch the front door and garage
- Climate control to automatically change the temperature based on if you are home or not, or change it remotely to be ready for when you get home
- Doorbell intercoms to allow you to ring your phone inside the house and have a 2-way conversation at the front door (these are 5 LEVEL townhouses, there is no way you'll make it down from the terrace to answer the door in time)

This is a very cool project for as I finally get to utilize many of the skills I have developed for the last 20 years in one spot.

Do any of these features sound like they would interest you or someone you know? Please contact me directly for a consultation. I even have a small show area in Oakville for many of the things listed above.

About us:
- What we do is full time. This is not a side job.
- We are a legitimately licensed electronics contractor with WSIB and liability insurance.
- We have our own trucks, tools and materials.
- You can be sure that the services we offer you are professional and backed up with a written warranty.
- I absolutely love what I do!

(No, we are not doing the garage door openers in these :)

On our way down to the CEDIA Expo in Atlanta.

CEDIA - Custom Electronics Design and Installation Association

Every year they have a large trade show with all the latest electronics for home theatre, home audio, home automation and more.

We get to see all the new TVs, BluRay players, speakers, AV Receivers, touch panels and remote controls that are coming up for the Christmas season.

I go down every year to attend the show but also 3 days worth of training. So not only are we up on all the new stuff, but we also know how it all works and how to properly install it for you.
