I did a bit of research on this when they were trying to get rid of the school zone designation on my street (Commercial St. - old Milton). The problem there, as with Yates, Scott and many other through-streets, is that they're so wide that people feel comfortable driving much faster than the speed limit.

Apparently the most effective 'traffic calming' methods involve either physically or visually narrowing the street. Even if you need the extra width for parking, having 'bump-outs' every 50-100 metres or so with curb parking in between can drastically reduce speeding.

As far as judging speed from the curb, I actually got to watch a couple of community volunteers once checking the speed of cars with a radar gun in front of my house - not to bust them but to collect statistics. In the ten minutes or so that I stood there, less than half the cars going by were going under 55 kph (the limit that time of day was 50). Most of the rest were going about 60, with a few as high as 70.

And yes, it turned out that I could gauge someone's speed pretty accurately by eye.

No. And nor should they.

we'll see how you feel when the police or fire unit is on their way to your home and are help up for 30 seconds as the negotiate the speed bumps. Let's hope those 30 seconds don't mean the difference between life and death.

I was driving on Clarke today - same thing, I could not believe the speed some of these people were doing. What about speed bumps to slow them down?

Agreed, they need speed bumps on Clark. There are so many parks and kids.. especially with the library at 4th Line and Clark, we walk along there all the time.

I posted it already but looks like this thread could use it. I will warn you it is Very Disturbing, I could not watch it all, but it is still very good to see at least part of it. I think it will slow most people down and make people think more seriously about the piece of machinery that they drive everyday.

If you look closely at a fire engine or an ambulance you'll notice the wheel base is wider than a car or pickup truck. This allows them to straddle the two slanted sides of the speed bums, only slowing a little. The smaller the vehicle the more damage it does to your suspension if you speed over it. A large vehicle (ie a fire truck) while hardly notice it.

That would depend on the type of "bump" being used. To be effective on a wide road like Scott or Clarke, no truck in the world is going to straddle it. Even if they're built in "pairs" to make the straddle work, the trucks will have to slow down to aim.
