We will be moving into a resale Mattamy home soon, and wanted to know if it's possible to remove the over the range cabinets (the 2 small ones). The kitchen has the extended cabnets, and does not allow for an OTR microwave.

Anyone know who to go to for this? I believe Frendel was the cabinet maker for the Vista phases, but I have no idea if they do work with homeowners.

Any help would be appreciated!

We had Frendel make us a smaller cabinet.. Cost was about $375 and took almost 2 months from order to pickup (was supposed to take 6 weeks).

Are you sure this is nessary, I lived in a home with regular cabinet and installed an OTR microwave. If you read the instructions in the manual you may find that you will make the clearance. I think but I am not 100% positive, but I think your microwave must be 30" from the stove top... or something like that. Anyways we had the minium clearance and it looked fine. Now your biggest problem may be installing the plug for the micro :)

I am in Vista sub divison too. I took up this matter with Mattamy on 30 days and 1 year form that the upper cabinets are not shortened enough to install the microwave hoodfan. I have not installed the microwave yet but considering the height of any microwave hoodfan the clearance between the base of microwave and the top of range will only be 17". I also have gas range for which I paid extra for the gas line. So mattamy knew that I need a lot more clearance compared to an electrical range requirements.
I spoke to Greg couple of times and he tried to explain the construction codes compliance. I told him that it is not only a concern of safety but also not practical to stir your food in a large pot.
While I was talking to our customer care coordinator she accidentaly mentioned that Mattamy received many complaints for the same issue and they have advised Frendell for the new subdivision. Ah.. so what will happen to the mistakes they already did ? To my question she never responded back my email and she kept on telling that I should be speaking to Greg.
Since Mattamy was behind in finishing my year end items I filed conciliation with tarion. lets see how it goes

It is neccessary in our case, since the home has a gas range that sits a bit higher than counter height (well the burners do anyway).

I spoke to some guy at the Frendel office, and could barely understand him. He did not seem like he wanted to do with a residential order (especially of this small size/cost), and basically told me it would take forever to get the cabinet and to not bet on it matching...great customer service!

There bread in butter is dealing with builders. We did order two drawer fronts from them after moving in, they will do it but it's not easy they aren't set up for residential sales.
