I was wondering about that construction too and was hoping it was NOT going to be a school.
Who comes up with these ideas to put an elementary school right on a major artery to Milton? As if Milton wasn't congested enough, we'll get a 40 km/h speed limit on that section of the road, school buses, stopped cars, possibly a pedestrian crossing with traffic light, like c'mon!!! I'm already concerned about how long it takes to get out of Milton but this issue about the school is also about the safety of the school kids.

I hope that school area will be fenced up like crazy before a fatality will happen.

Not happy at all with the location, the 40km/h slow down and buses in the morning will be a bitch to get out of Milton in the morning for work.
It's funny because I could just drive around that area through Louis St. Lauren to James snow to Derry to omit the school, but now there's also new school opened on Louis St Laureen
Steels is a disaster since I moved to Milton god knows how many years before, only Britannia seems to somehow magically have a good flow.

What's the reason for putting school so close to biggest road in Milton ?

You are correct that Derry Road speed limit will stay the same. The main entrance to the school will NOT be off Derry Road but Sauve or off Bennett. Although not in the plans at this point there is some discussion about the students who will be walking from the northern section to get to the school. I dont have the plans in front of me now, but there might be a light at Sauve for a crosswalk but I'll investigate and get back.

The Halton District School board located the new Milton #7 (yet to be named) school after a review of the growing Beaty and Clark neighbourhoods and possible alternative locations.

The school is similar in design to the Halton Catholic District School Board's Our Lady of Victory K-8 school which also sides onto Derry road and has it's entrances off Commercial Street and has been open since 1984 and has had no problems with students crossing Derry road.

I am working with regional and local engineering staff to have the traffic lights installed at Sauve and Derry as soon as the school opens to serve this area and the growing Clark neighbourhood to the north with the street connecting with Costigan road to provide an alternative to Miller Way and the nearly 1000 new homes being built in various locations north of Derry road.

Thanks, Colin. I've been attempting to locate on the HDSB site the status and timing of the naming of new School #7 without success. Do you happen to know where that process stands, and that the timeline is for a selection? I believe public submissions closed some time ago, and the selection was in the March/April timeframe?

The boundary for the new school has been released by HDSB and there will be no students from the north side of Derry attending the school. The school is a combined english/FI stream school and it's designed specifically to offload Bruce Trail, Hawthorne Village, EW Foster, and Tiger Jeet Singh - mainly Bruce Trail, Hawthorne and EW Foster. The english stream boundary is Derry on the north, the pipeline trail in the south, Thompson on the west, James Snow Parkway on the east. The FI boundary is Derry on the north, Louis St Laurent to the South, Thompson on the West, James Snot Parkway on the east.

Colin and Donna Danielli (trustee) will correct me if my recollection is wrong but this school was not originally planned for in the Bristol Survey development (the first phase of development in Milton back in 1999ish time frame). Long story short the board and region underestimated the number of expected students by about 2 schools worth. Best planning estimates at the time did not match what ended up being reality, but it took some time to realize the error and years to fix, and all-day every day kindergarten further added to the capacity problem. PLR and Escarptment View were designed with both the improved student projection estimates and FDK in mind. TJS if I recall was designed with the revised population estimates but not FDK. Hawthorne had a porta-pack added to the school, and Bruce Trail will still need an extra 16 classrooms added to the school even with this new school opening in the fall. It will be similar to Our Lady of Victory at Derry and Commercial in terms of fencing and Derry access.

MM2000GTS, the submissions for naming have closed. The short-list will be announced in April (I asked area Trustee Nancy MacNeil). Watch the Board Meeting Agenda. I'm watching for it too. My kids will be going to this school.

I'm not sure this is a good idea. Slicing up Derry Road this much will creat an enormous congestion. Those of us who go East to work want to reach James Snow so we can go LSL, Derry or Main. So far Derry was the least congested or the fastest/most convenient. This is going to create gridlocks in Milton, not to mention how close of a distance the traffic lights would be so we'll end up sitting through green light after green light because the next light ahead on Derry is red. Main Street already has a school, LSL has a school and now Derry will have a school. Please do not put a school on Britannia and Steeles or we'll end up taking 40 minutes just to get out of Milton!

Sorry but this intersection is already in place as you can notice at the end of Sauve which will be extended north to wind into the new Clark neighbourhood which has four builders building at present. Laurier Avenue is already extended to Cedar Hedge Trail and will connect with the new Mattamy Patterson area through a Trudeau Drive extension which could also spread the area traffic out instead of being funneled through Miller Way at present. See the attached link for the proposed 436 homes on the north side of Trudeau near James Snow Parkway which council should be considering later this spring.(see figure 2 for the detailed plan)

The new traffic lights are designed to be traffic activated similar to the new Laurier/Bronte lights which remain green unless there is vehicles at the cross streets activating the overhead digital cameras which are replacing the older style underground loops.

I should have a report back from regional staff next week on all the 2013 regional road projects in the Milton area which senior staff gave the Mayor, Councillor Lambert and I an update yesterday at my request which I will be posting on the villager on the Steeles Avenue 4 lane reconstruction, James Snow parkway extension, Tremaine road 4 lane re-alignment north of Main W. and 6 lane construction south of Derry, Highway #25 4 lane construction south of Britannia, Derry road underpass and the Steeles & Ontario street intersection improvements.

That would be similar to the light at Ferguson and Louis St Laurent too. Can we make sure it has all the right parts to work properly the first time? The one on LSL and Ferguson for the first six or eight weeks of it's operation (maybe more or just felt like it) would be green for Ferguson, Red for LSL until a car sat at the intersection and has thankfully been fixed now. An annoyance on LSL but would be horrendous on Derry. To quote Mike Holes - let's "do it right the first time" with this one please!

Funny you should mention that because I get stopped at this light constantly when there are no cars on Laurier at all. I know us Western Milton peeps have been clamoring for some of the amenities that East Milton has, but the Thompson light debacle was one we could have done without. Nothing better than getting stopped at 3 lights in under a KM along Bronte.

(that last sentence was sarcasm)

I look forward to getting an additional red light on my daily commute along Derry. 23 stoplights in 20 kms isn't enough! Maybe we should add a light at 8th line too?
