I’ve been a long time guest on this forum but first time poster. We are currently looking a renovating a very small galley kitchen in our townhome (built in the 90s) but are having trouble with the placement of our (electric) stove. Currently it is butted against an interior wall and we were hoping to move it over but because of the distance of the kitchen ‘island’ (with a sink, dishwasher and I believe structural supports on the walls beside the island) there is not enough clearance when we open the stove to the island cabinets. Would simply placing a stainless metal sheet on the side wall be up to code? We were also looking a getting a separate cooktop and oven but the expense of the appliances and wiring would really be $$$$. Any suggestions would be appreciate!

It's usually okay, but not ideal, to have a wall beside an electric stove unless the stoves manual says different. Required clearance issues mostly relate to what is above the stove. Drywall is also not really considered as a combustible material.

Code can not cover every issue. If this was a commercial kitchen or stove then no doubt there would be more specific requirements.

Obviously a wall beside a stove would provide no counter space at a premium location and splatter and likely heat would make a painted drywall wall look like hell.

The stainless steel solution would solve the mess issue.

The stove manual may have clearance requirements. If it does that it would be those rules that you would need to follow.
