Hi Everyone

I've noticed on our house and MANY others that the down spouts from the top roof dumps the water down on the shingles of the main floor roof below. The result is a large and fast volume of water running over the shingles in a small area. I've driven by some older Mattamy homes over by Trudeau and notice that the shingles start curling under these troughs MUCH earlier than the rest of the roof, presumably from water "erosion" being higher there. Has anyone extended this spout down to the trough on the edge of the rood? Would Mattamy provide an extension to he trough?

Thanks

Our house, and 3 neighbours beside us all had leaks as a result of this ridiculous design. In our case, they not only had the drain flowing onto the lower roof, but also, they had it flowing out horizontally so the water was seeping underneath the tiles.

At first they refused to do anything (we complained before it leaked) but then after a good rain, and we all leaked, they came and changed the direction. I still plan on extending the drain another 2' so that it doesn't flow over the shingles.

I'm hoping to be able to find a matching piece of spout pipe from Mattamy to use to extend it down off the roof.

They had mine aimed horizintaly too aiming at a peak on my porch.

When it would rain, water would come out of the pot lights on my porch.

I went on the roof and aimed it down myself.

I believe that one if the home inspectors on this site mentioned you should extend the pipe down so it will drain directly into the next levels gutter since it will errode your shingles prematurely.

Matt

If the upper downspout discharges straight downward onto the roof below you will not have a leak, but yes, those shingles below will wear more quickly due to the increased flow in that area.
If the upper downspout discharges sideways onto the lower roof then there is a greater potential for leakage of the lower roof.
Ideally, upper downspouts should extend along the lower roof to the lower roof eavestrough. Builders don't do this because it's not required by code and because, in most cases, it detracts from the look of the house (so less sales). Besides, what does the builder care if one area of your shingles is totally shot in 10 years.
Home Depot can provide downspouts to match most colours. Whether you decide to extend your upper downspout depends on how motivated you are, how handy you are, and how you think it will look on your house.

LOL, at least the guy who put that extension on didn't have to worry about ruining the appearance of the roof.

Home inspector told me to install a pipe from the downspout exit over a short section of my roof directly emptying into my eavestrough in my previous house (a Mattamy semi). This was an excellent idea as I did this but my neighbour did not. In the space of 2 years his roof tiles were curling and starting to disintegrate because of the water and mine were fine! Highly recommend doing this were possible.

Hi Ecuador,

A few months ago while on Silver Court, I talked to a guy who was moving a downspout that was in front of a shutter at a window of a Mattamy home. I asked him how much he would charge to extend a downspout to a lower roof and he said $25.

I thought this was quite reasonable and I got one of the companies cards.

Their company name is - New Age Aluminum Ltd. and the phone number is 416 841 5841 or 905 921 5841.

Andy
