Most politicians in her shoes would have left Mississauga with a crushing debit as well. She didn’t. In our system, that’s a huge win.
She also ran Carolyn Parrish out of politics, which is a the single biggest favor to the citizens anyone could possibly do. That woman was an epic disaster in the making and she would probably be Mayor right now if it wasn’t for Hazel.
Wait a minute! A $1.5 billion infrastructure deficit is peanuts. Well it may be pocket change to you but to some of us who lived there and others who still live there, hefty residential tax increases will be needed to repair and upgrade the city services. She didn't bother to set aside funds by raising minimal taxes over the years to cover the needs down the road. Now the DC's have come to an end as not much land is left to build housing. Carolyn Parrish may not be your favourite politician but she did point out some flaws in some of Hazel's decision such as if a fund had been set aside for infrastructure upgrading, interest could have been earned. Hazel's unilateral decision on the Hydro partnership with an outsider was not presented to council so it could be voted upon.
And how Hazel escaped culpability on the matter of the potential real estate transaction with her son is rather murky. It resulted in council changing rules on members having prior knowledge of a project so they can be barred from voting. Golden years indeed for Mississauga.
