Some 8,000 helium balloons have been released into the night sky over Germany's capital at the culmination of events to mark the 25th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall. I am sure it must have been a great experience to feel all the love, and forgiveness at these special moment |

I wonder how many birds and small animals will be killed by the remnants of these helium balloons. A great moment to remember and celebrate (I toured Berlin some years ago and explored Check Point Charlie and remnants of the wall, a humbling experience), but could they not have used a more eco friendly way to celebrate? |

The thing to remember about the fall of the Berlin wall is that it was more of a symbolic than substantive event. The fall of communism was more complicated. It basically began when Soviet Union signaled a non-interventionist policy towards the Eastern Bloc nations, and was the result of much earlier stagnation/failure of centrally planned economies. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Revolutions_of_1989 |

The Great Depression was caused by government (Federal Reserve excessively constraining the monetary supply). Ironically capitalism was erroneously blamed which paved the way for introduction of socialism. True capitalism existed in the 19th century and early 20th century, a time of incredible development and improvement in people's standard of living. The conditions prior to industrialization were very harsh where children frequently starved and died of diseases. PS: Big business is scared of competition not government.
