Found the best price to be at JD tire in town (convenient!), ordered mine from there for install next week.

Hi Kyle and Jay
How was your experience -- would you recommend JD Tire ? I need a new set of tires -- looking for a local option -- either JD or Canadian Tire.
Cheers

I've had good experiences with Steve at Bargain Tire and Steve at Milltown Tire. Will likely try JD for the first time once I get my rubber.

pete, rwd is much easier to control than fwd imo. miss my rwd. :(
they say we should be getting a dumping tonight so watch out.

to the OP, too early can be bad. if its too warm you'll burn up the rubber.

For those living in Original HV, be very careful approaching the left turn lane turning onto Clark from Thompson. There's a sheet of ice in that section that even my winter tires didn't help when it came to braking, so my ABS was going apesh!t. Don't follow so close as you get into the left turn lane and go slow; otherwise you will rear-end someone.

For those of you that swap out to snow tires on dedicated rims, how do you store your mounted All Season tires after you take them off?

All of the wall-mounted tire storage racks that I've seen seem to have the tires upright but I've heard that this can cause issues as the weight of the tire/rim pressing down on the rubber can cause problems with the treads? A few places have told me that they should be stacked horizontally but that would seem like a lot of weight pressing down on the bottom one...

Is one way really better than the other or does it really make that much of a difference to worry about?

don't forget to make sure the wheels are clean also. otherwise the brake dust will just embed itself in the wheel and damage the finish.

We've just installed two sets of tire racks like these from Lowe's in our home:

I just bought a set of Nokian Hakkapeliitta snow tires with rims for under $1,000 at Kal Tire. It was worth the drive to Hamilton (in this case at least!); it was the best deal from about six places my boyfriend looked at for me, including buying from the U.S. and shipping to his CBI box (particularly with the exchange rate at this time).

Wow Linda, good buy! That's a top-of-the-line tyre, good price and you spelled the model name correctly.

No need to worry about that at all. If you are concerned, just add extra air to the tires before racking.

In terms of storage, I just stack mine on the garage floor. Never had an issue. Just clean and dry the wheels before storing.

I have bought a rack from Canadian Tire. Doing good job for last 5 years. This one comes on sale usually for 20 or so dollars.

I get my tire switched out at costco. Costco puts all the tire is separate bags, I then store the tires under my deck. We have a high deck with skirting and an access door. We just store them flat on the ground pile 2 high

knowing how much more grip you have with winter tires over the best all seasons, and considering we get hit pretty well every winter and always see -20c weather with snow and ice. i think it's best for it to be mandatory. hopefully insurance prices go down at the same time though. just hope not to see a negative part happen. like people driving on winters all year round and then having massive blow outs in the summer when the tire disintegrates.

Ever since I moved to Milton, I got winter tires. Reason was poor snow removal system here as compare to Peel where I used to live. Never had winter tires while living in Peel but it is good to have them doesn't matter which city you live in.

One thing we can't fix is stupid; even with snow tires, it's only a finite degree of added safety and function, not a total safeguard. In my experience, snow tires are useless in emergency braking on slippery roads. Normal braking, they can help you stop sooner, but on ice, no chance. People still need to drive carefully, brake beforehand, and sadly, not enough people follow those basic precautions in snow driving, that's why with every single snowstorm, there are always fender-benders or reports of police being called every few minutes.

Instead of mandatory snow tires, I think people who get into any type of collisions due to negligence should be fined even more, or get fined and also get their licenses suspended for a defined period as punishment. Hitting people in the pocketbooks hard and crippling their ability to be mobile would be the most emphatic forms of punishment, IMO; I know these consequences would work on me in forcing greater compliance to safety precautions.

Would be nice if insurance companies gave winter tire users a break, or more of a break anyways. My current company, RBC, gives me nothing for having winter tires, but I have heard some companies give a little bit. However since insurance companies aren't in the business of giving anything up, at least charge people who don't have them more to offset the increases on the rest of us.
