Hi everyone, when we purchased our house we had the option of a full cold cellar (full span of porch) or half. We got the half option, but would like to take down the wall to make it larger. Do they backfill that area with dirt? Anything we should know before doing this? Thanks!!

they didn't fill it with dirt, they left the dirt there. Dirt is older than Mattamy.

You know it'll be dirt because there's nothing cheaper Mattamy could think of to put in there.

To answer your question yes they backfill with dirt from the previously excavated lot.

This project is a bad idea. Opening the foundation wall between the cold room and the void under the porch is a big job that only a pro should do. Plus, you will need to pour a concrete floor in that area. As well, a large steel lintel will likely need to be installed to support the porch once the wall or any portion of the wall is removed. To do it right the cost would be high and IMO much better spent elsewhere. But, if your pockets are so full of money that you have nothing better to do with it then go ahead. Keep in mind that if it is not done right, and in this case with permits, then IMO you will wreck the resale value of the home.
