Anyone using this streaming software using a streaming box like Boxy Box or MyGica?

We're thinking about cancelling cable and was looking to find out a little more about streaming. Any good video add ons for live TV and / or sports?

What video add ons do you use for movies and recorded TV shows?

Any info would be great.

Hi,

I use XMBC/Kodi on Mygica - ATV582. I know a guy that sells them in burlington.

I really like it and i thought i would cancel cable but ended up keeping it cause my lovely wife doesn't have patience for finding links that work. We use it a lot though. I haven't used it for its full functionality but it works for me.

I use it with a raspberry pi - mainly for movies and ballstreams (raptors). Same issues as above, you need to be patient to find links that work

I use the MyGica with XBMC and am overall pretty satisfied. For recorded Movies and TV shows it is great once you find the better quality streams. The catalogue is huge and has many obscure, often thought forgotten movies and tv shows. It is a bit of a learning process, as you will need to figure out what the better stream channels are, but once you do, it will work well. For the live tv, this one I haven't had the best experience with. You very rarely get HD and when it comes to big PPV events, there is a high potential for interruption due to volume of viewers. Maybe I just haven't figured out the best streams yet, but so far this is the only critique I have. Last reco is, have this box hardwired with an ethernet cable as I find the wireless can get a bit choppy.

If you decide to go this route, do not buy from any retailers or kijiji sellers. I fell for this trap and overpaid to the tune of $125. They will try to convince you that you need them to set the box up and give you the apps for the Movies and TV, but you don't need them. Its easily accessible and free to download from the box itself. There are plenty of online tutorials to walk you through the process that are easy to do. I consider myself a below average tech guy and I have been able to find everything I need for the second box I bought. So just buy direct from the company, I think they charge you $10 shipping.

Good luck, if you have any other questions, feel free to hit me up.

Plex is another streaming software worth checking out. I'm using it at home and am really impressed with it.

I wrote about this a few months ago, here's an overview of the options available.

I also am an avid fan of Kodi... And although people are telling you that you have to install it on specific hardware... They are wrong.. You can install Kodi on just about anything.

I have successfully installed it on: IOS & Mac (provided they are jailbroken), as well as any instance of Android (without rooting), and even repurposed an older laptop and using it as a "media centre".

The issue with Plex.. Or I should say where plex Plex is lacking is that you need to add channels to get the same level of service, which are available. At a premium. An example of this is hockeystreams.net. At the end of the day, Plex gets you to media you own or want to pay for.

I purchased this:

http://www.amazon.com/Mk903v-Google-Don ... roid+stick

and got a small bluetooth handheld keyboard and trackpad for my bedroom.. I've also got "AC" wireless (NotHawthorny I really recommend investing in this if you want to go wireless with decent speeds, otherwise you're bang on about a hardwire connection).

within 10 minutes I had Kodi installed, TVaddons.org & super repo added. Within 15 minutes I had the 2015 ICC World Cup in HD. I was watching all televised hockey games, regardless of blackouts.

Now in regards to trashing your cable bill..:

1. This isn't going to be easy as clicking on a channel and it working... Lots of channels do not work properly, or at all
2. You are going to need to have some technical prowess or at least aren't worried about doing a few google searches and applying the solution to your issue
3. You're going to spend more time browsing the selection, and less time watching it.
4. You can find local news channels, but its not like just putting on CP24 and leaving it on.

If you get stuck on anything, please feel free to ask me as well, I've been using XBMC, back when it was released on the XBOX, and it definitely has come a LONG way... But I will say there isn't any other software/service that can hold a candle to it.

This is absolutely correct.

My angle with Plex, and it’s not going to be for everyone, is the ease of use. If your running PC’s or Macs or whatever, XBMC or whatever may work out better for you. It does more.

I have been running Windows Media Centers for a few years and was happy with them but I found them to just be a pain in the ass. They were 90% reliable, then 10% of the time needed to be fiddled with somehow. Windows updates interrupting a movie, Netflix stopped supporting it, codecs failed. Something was always poping up to nag you, and the family hated it because they couldn’t trust it to work.

I piled into Plex when they released a client for the Xbox One/PS4. This is fantastic. The Xbox always works. It’s built to be a TV appliance, so there’s no bullshit to deal with. Just install Plex, point it to your media, and your done. The Xbox won’t flake out like a PC will, it just works. This is key to passing the wife test, and since Netflix is also on Xbox, not having it via Plex is no longer an issue.

As soon as MS releases a TV tuner for OTA TV, I’m buying one for every TV in the home and ditching all my media centers. The only downside is you must pay for plex on the Xbox. It’s free on PC’s.

Kodi vs. Plex

Plex wins... For simply viewing video. You can stream all your content on your iPhone and iPad, and then pause it and continue viewing on your home computer or tv device.

Kodi wins... If you are going to do the respoitory crap. Also the add ons make the experience much more personal as well. If you like to tinker and customize Kodi is good for that as well.

Hi Everyone

First off thanks for all the great feedback. I took the plunge and purchased a MyGica box. I was able to program a few video add ons and I'm liking what I see so far, specifically Genesis.

Any good add ons for live sports. By good add on I have tempered expectations. I realize it may not always (or may rarely) be a crisp HD signal but as long as I can follow along with the action I'd be happy. I also realize that the quality will also partially depend on the speed of my internet connection, so again as long as I can follow along with what is happening I'm happy.

So I'm pretty happy with what I see from Genesis in terms of recorded TV series and movies but are there currently any good video add ons for live TV channels?

Thanks!

Is that a good current add on? Would I install it on xbmc by going into the Systems, File Manager, Add Source, type TVaddons.org into the address bar, create a name, etc? Then pull the adds ons from Get add ons?

Thanks!

Exactly VCola... If you need specifics, Follow the instructions here:

http://www.tvaddons.ag/install-kodi/

Pay attention to what platform you are running, and follow the install bit, followed by configure.

You'll also want to get familiar with super repo And add that as a source as well.

Well there's a little more to it then that. You can get lost with all the features that Kodi offers these days... The PVR integration, radio, live tv, Asian / Euro content.

They really serve two different purposes. Plex gives you access to your library across all apps... I can even sign in remotely to my plex server and watch media over LTE or have access to my entire music collection on the road, or even over Bluetooth while driving. In my opinion the true value of Plex is when I am away, and not at home. I've also paid for a plexpass, and have it setup on multiple mediums (iPad, android phone, roku).

If you have Kodi setup properly, all you need is proper media sharing (Shared windows drive, NAS, TRANSCODE360, PS3 Media server, etc) you can achieve the same goal with streaming media.

One of the coolest things about xbmc since 2003 was when you had an HD video that is split across many compressed formats (rar, zip, 7zip) it would actually decompress it on the fly.

I have yet to see any other media software accomplish that, let alone offer the vast amount of media it scrapes from the Internet. Not to mention an entirely free solution that offers such an amazing online community.

Thanks!!! I'll set up the video add on and mess around with the super repo over the next few days.
