Yay for those still moving in!
We have Andy booked for this week. There are still a bunch of things from our PDI that they are fixing and we seem to be finding new small things daily. I hope Andy doesn't find too much! But apart from the small detailed things, we love our home!

So, the fire alarm upstairs, is it a dual carbon monoxide and smoke detector or should there be two units? Last night, a little after midnight, the fire alarm went off for about five seconds, woke me up in a total panic. Then it went off for about a minute and then went off again for a few seconds before it stopped. We found no reason for it to go off - anyone else have alarm issues?

Sorry, I have to vent ...

Mattamy has goofed up once more .....and again in the master ensuite!
They gave us some hand me down tiles/bull noses in the ensuite....nothing like the sample we selected which we verified at the decor centre on the weekend...that we got ripped off....worse thing is, I still haven't heard from customer care...I guess they are inquiring about it with the vendor etc....gosh I hope they fix it.

They did however fix the soaker tub by replacing it with the appropriate colour...how did everyone else find Mattamy's response time and execution when regarding defects to the home during the building process?

Hey Neighbours!

It's been a looong while since we posted on here, as we have been so busy with the move! But finally, we are here! :) It's been almost a week and so far it's been going quite smoothly and we are settling in slowly but surely!

We've experienced the same great service as #1 - the Mattamy guys (Andrew and Dan) have been great and accommodating our needs as much as possible. We have just some cosmetic things that can be fixed during our 30-day, but we did one find one big thing...the kitchen cabinets above our fridge is crooked! At first we thought it was our fridge that was uneven, but after using a leveller, it was definitely the cabinets. Frendel is supposed to come in this week to fix it, so hopefully it won't be a big fix!

Other than unpacking, it's also been great to see some of our neighbours in their homes! I'm sure after we are a bit more settled in, we'll run into the rest of the Coombsters! Btw, are any of you going to the Hawthorne Village Tree Lighting this Friday? It would be great to see you all there, hopefully it's not raining or freezing out!

Oh, and for those that are doing hardwood after close, if you're not doing anything with your carpets and will just throw it out, we'll gladly take some if it's cool! We'd like some for our basement :) Just PM us if anything!

Congrats again to everyone's that has moved in! Our street is looking great!

Christine & Sal

Welcome back to the forum and welcome to the neighbourhood, Sal and Christine!
Come on over and say hello!
Happy unpacking! I'm going to try to head over to the tree lighting with the kidlets - Oliver is working so just depends on how energetic I feel in juggling the kids on my own :P

We are doing / did the same thing as you, install hardwood prior to moving in. We went with The Hardwood Flooring store, great select, price was the best, and we did a lot of shopping. I believe Dean used them as well. Turn-around time for wood was 2 days as well. most places wait a couple of weeks.
Locations in Markham and Burlington
If you want to pop by to check it out, let me know, lot 21, pretty much across the street.
Be prepared for some sore backs and knees !!

Rich

Hey Rich,

Thanks for the tip! Ya Dean mentioned this place as well. I went into the Burlington store and they said that they had no stock of the hardwood that we wanted, but I was able to get enough at the Markham store. They have very limited stock which is alright since we are only planning on doing the family room for now. Maybe in a couple of years when we can actually furnish the living room, we'll put the hardwood in there. Ya, sore backs and knees are the regular it seems.

I'd love to check it out if possible! Any specific time/day that would be best? I wanna see what people did for their transitions more then anything else. I'm thinking reducer strip, but I'd love suggestions. Also, anyone install hardwood WITHOUT taking off the baseboards? I know technically you are supposed to, but may add a quarter round to cover up the expansion gap.

Thoughts?

Thanks!

Rob

Question for those installing hardwood after closing. If you are installing hardwood in your living/great rooms, what did you do with existing trim?

What I mean is did you have to take it off and then install hardwood?
OR
Did the guys installing the hardwood fit the planks without touching the trim at all?

Let me know.
Thanks.

Thanks, Amy! It's always fun unpacking, isn't it...well we hope to see most of you there tonight! Looking forward to it! :D

Hey guys, just doing some research on central vacs, and I am leaning towards a central vac system made by Drainvac. They have execellent ratings, but one thing I do like about their vacs is the performance (similiar technology to Dyson vacuums) and the fact that they have models that can be used as a wet or dry vac. This would be extremely helpful in the future in case of sump pump failure, or water spills. Another benefit is that you can shampoo your car interiors and carpets. I've yet to see the units personally, but I will keep you guys updated if I manage to get a group discount somewhere.

Also, I may be putting as order for some compact dish drying racks. If anyone is interested because they have the smaller sink, PM me. If anyone found a dish rack that fits the small sink locally please do tell where you found the dish rack...

I'll be checking your post re central vac....in the mean time any idea how much these units go for?

I have no idea. Depending on house size I would imagine $500-$1000.

Okay, I made some progress on the central vacs. First of all, please do your research on the vaccuums out there. Doing my own research I think Drainvac is an excellent central vac. They are Canadian made out of Quebec, they use German made motors, they have the largest capacity on the market, they use the best technology right now and they are quiet. They also use an excellent filter made with Silverclear

I was able to find a really good group buy deal on the Drainvac units through a company that deals with mostly builders. The deal goes as follows;

MAIN UNIT:
Drainvac - 500 air watts - 2PR9923-C - 9 gal/41L capacity, 73 db - $394.25 - Recommended for up to 3500sq ft.

Drainvac - 600 air watts - 2PR9938-C - 9 gal/41L capacity, 73 db - $475 - Recommended for up to 5000sq ft.

Drainvac - 700 air watts - 2G20028-C/CM - 9 gal/41L capacity, 58 db - $612.75 - Recommended for 6500 sqft.

Electrical package - 30' crushproof hose, 3 way switch, 7 piece floor kit, 2 telescopic wands, 1 powerhead, wall mount for hose - $304

Hose cover - $31.35

Car kit - 30' crushproof hose, 3 piece kit, wall mount for hose - $44.65

Installation - $228

Not sure on whether delivery will be included, but you will have to add HST to the prices above.

I would recommend the 500 watt for anyone 2000 sq ft and under, the 600 watt for anyone 3200 sq ft and under and the 700 watt for anyone over 3200 sq ft or anyone that wants a really quiet unit.

So you can build your package any way you like. The main thing here is the purchase of the main unit. If we get 10+ purchases of the main unit the price gets better. These prices are in Canadian dollars.

Here is more information:
Central Vacuum types

Drain Vac US pricing

Central Vacuum sizing

Anyways, let me know guys.

Very interested...can you let me know what's involved in the installation process?

I think the unit will be installed in the garage or basement (where ever you ordered the exit pipes), install wall plates in the house, wire up the wall plates/unit.

Personally, I'm installing my unit myself because it doesn't look difficult. The install option is nice for people who want no hassle.
