(I guess nobody told the union about cellphone blocking in the new HDSB schools, I've seen the devices myself in PL Robertson)

It is illegal to block/scramble/interfere with communication devices
They had to apply for special permits to even do this in G20 so I really doubt they have a "cell phone blocker" in a school
Most likely the building itself is just absorbing signal

I think my house has a signal blocker...never get service anywhere in my house except right by the front or back doors.
We live in a black hole...

The science that supports the concept that wireless is a health hazard is completely bogus. The union was simply rejecting the ban based on the fact that it was a health hazard.

Cellphones are already banned in the vast majority of classrooms, to little effect.

Also note that blocking and jamming are not the same thing. Blocking a signal is possible, legal, and probably of great value in our schools. Jamming is illegal, since you are not allowed to broadcast on the spectrum owned by the cellphone company without their permission.

Now, the real problem here is that we are not allowed to have a wireless signal in the school, which means that are computers are all connected with wires, which is a major pain. The students can access the internet in the halls, but I need to plug in my laptop to get on the internet. It is ridiculous.

nope, the school runs picocells that only allow authorized use
i.e. emergency services

Disallowing you use on their system is something totally different than actually blocking a cellular device (which is illegal under the Radio Communication Act)

Every school and school board is different.

We don't have wireless at my school....however....our last staff meeting focused on getting it and how it would benefit us. That conversation was directed at us by the school board...I'm sure it's coming.

We do not allow students to have cell phones in class...however many teachers ( in other schools and boards )now are allowing students to use them as a tool in class.
