Have they changed the tech on the Hybrids? Last I looked into them, the electric engine only worked up to (about) 50km/h. Above that speed, the gas engine kicks in. So if you're trying to use HOV lanes, you're obviously on the highway and using gas. No savings. Hybrids are good for in city driving, not commuting.

Yeah but you can also park in those spots at the SuperStore too. I love parking there in my gas-guzzling sportscar. Sometimes I even let it idle.

I laugh every time I see non-hybrids in those spots, which is surprisingly often.

Buy a motorcycle. Easy on gas, and you instantly get "bad mo-fo" status.

That would be cool but my I put clients in my car and i don't want some dude that I barely know giving me the reach around.

407 and a nice Infiniti M56 seems like your best option

I take the 407 when I can and drive the Infiniti M37x which takes premium gas and i get about 13 litres per 100 km so it doesnt take long to go through $100. But I do like your idea and love the M56! Wish i could afford it.

Also, vagina.

I just test drove the hyundai hybrid and was quite impressed. It's not as wussy as you guys think. 204 HP and it has some pick up. Nice interior too.

Dude, great idea! I did not even consider a diesel. Any cool cars out there with a diesel in the 40k range?

Superstore has a loose screw this these "special" parking spots for hybrid cars, and rightly so, everyone ignores the signs and parks in them.

Why Superstore "values" hybrid car drivers over other customers is beyond me.

Unless you drive 50km a year+ dont bother. A civic is your best bet. That being said the Camry Hybrid is great and the Sonata hybrid is about the best technologically.

I looked into the sonata hybrid briefly last year. Lots of reports of fuel economy much worse than advertised (beyond the usual 'real world' adjustments). Compared to a regular sonata or similar the price difference vs gas savings weren't worthwhile. You may want to do some research on that to see if the initial poor fuel economy reviews were just small sample size.

In my case I ended up going with an Elantra, saving 10-15k straight away vs a hybrid and probably paying only an extra $500-700 in fuel costs a year.

Volkwagen Passat, Jetta, and the Golf Wagon are all available with the 2.0 TDI diesel. I get approx. 1000Kms from a tank of diesel. I filled up this morning at $1.319 for about $65. Not to mention the 236lbs of torque @ 1750rpm the TDI produces. Take one out for a testdrive...

Hybrid has higher upfront cost that you really only recoup if you use alot of gas (drive pretty far, more than 20,000 km in an avg year)
Also remember hybrid is 100% useless for highway driving (you burn gas at that point) so that 20,000 km is based on city driving at less than 50km/h
Battery replacement varies based on who you talk to, but expect at least once every 10 years
Also remember due to electric components you are more likely to increase normal maintenance costs

When we bought our 2012 I looked and cost was totally not worth it

And yet, the same store gives you increasingly large grocery discount coupons the more money you spend fuelling at their gas bar.

That's good mileage. Thanks, they are nice cars and I will check em out.

Los Arango,

What did you finally decide? Hybrid or Diesel? I'm in the same position this year trying to sort out a pair of wheels that won't make me wince every time I pull into a gas station. I don't do allot of highway driving, around 20,000 km or less per year. I'm hoping to find something used, reliable, that will give me a break at the gas pumps. Thanks for any advice.

Mazda's new skyactiv tech is pretty nice too.
The engineers there did away with some moving parts and increased compression ratios to 14:0:1( the highest of any production class)
They always knew that efficiency and power went hand in hand. I believe the new mazda6 will have a diesel option coming soon. What's better than driving past the pumps?
Driving past the pumps grabbing your crotch and flipping the bird.
It's allowed, neither is a hand held device!
Correction, only one isn't!

You can tell by this post that for you it truly is a hand held device. I wouldn't be surprised if you haven't been laid in months.
