Wonder if the recycling guys would a) be able to figure it out and b) not end up throwing it in truck with the rest of the contents.

It's attached to your bin (screwed on). So it's unlikely to get lost. Hopefully they become more popular and people start using them. Im going to visit Canadian Tire to see if they carry them.

Those bungee things look like a good idea however knowing how lazy the recycling guys are, I'm sure they'd just leave your recycling there as it's too much effort to unhook it.

what makes you say they are lazy? I haven't seen anything to exhibit they're lazy. Could this be a stereotype?

I wouldn't say they are lazy, They do a very gruelling and dirty task. The thing that bothers me is that recycling guys don't pick up stuff that they drop inadvertently on the street. The garbage guys wont even bother to collect a garbage bag that has drifted into the street by even a metre. They drive past windblown bags in the street all the time when they could just as easily stop and toss them in. Yates and LSL now have at least 7 or 8 bags that have obviously blown down the street from their original location to common areas and the trucks drove right by them yesterday.

It's funny the differences between communities for recycling programs - since it's all essentially going to the same places anyways.

Guelph uses the bags exclusively, if you put out a bin it won't get picked up.
(Green bag for green bin stuff, blue bag for recyclables and a white clear bag for regular landfill garbage)

At least if we switched to bags it would contain it all. Less litter on pickup days.

Is there any way to have them collect earlier in the day? They don't come to my area until about 3 or 4 pm and by that point the street is a mess!

They DO collect earlier in the day! Just not on your street, obviously! I'm pretty sure the solution here is not having garbage collectors only work until noon so that nobody's garbage gets picked up past that!

Thanks everyone for your comments and ideas.

I raised your concerns at this morning's Planning & Public Works meeting at the Region. Staff will be bringing back a report with some recommendations on blue boxes with lids similar to what the City of Montreal uses which are smaller than Torontos and can be used in combination with the existing blue boxes which have been used for over 20 years for heavier materials and you can put the smaller lidded blue boxes on top to weight down both bins to prevent the wind blowing materials around. Check the attached link for current recommendations on how to use your blue box and green bins.

http://www.halton.ca/living_in_halton/recycling_waste/

Bags are not used by Halton as they jam up the processing equipment and create more work in the recycling process.

Town and Regional staff are cleaning up any wind blown debris from Monday's high winds and the Town is holding some community clean ups later in April and May which everyone can join in to help keep Milton clean.

For those interested I am looking to get a few residents together on April 22nd Sunday to help clean up a few parks in Ward 6. Meighan Park was chosen as one as well as McDuffe Park.

If you're interested in participating that Sunday please email me mike@mikecluett.ca. We've had a few park cleanups over the last year or so and they're always a good time.

Colin,
Can we look into boxes like City of Toronto is using? I think it would be a better long-term solution as the boxes are very durable, and store nicely at the side of people's houses.
