I don't know what the training is for police on how to deal with people with mental health issues, but whatever it is, they need more.
There needs to be something in the computer that alerts the police to someone's disabilities/mental health issues. I'm sure the police were aware that this man was deaf. However, whether you are drunk or not, if you are mentally ill or have a disability, different responses need to be made.

An ex bf of mine is bi polar. He was stopped by the police over 15 years ago and had his arm broken by them. Anyways, he was stopped for speeding in Milton on his way to my place. He got stopped, flipped out, ran to my place. Anyways, the police officer that stopped him was amazing with him. He let him take his time to cool down, he was great. However, other officers showed up and were completely non-sympathetic to his issues. It simply made the situation worse.

In Milton, the police should have extra training with working with deaf people simply because of EC Drury.

This is just another example of Halton Police vigilante behaviour with nothing else better to do. And trust me, I have other examples, LOL

unfortunately, being drunk in public puts you in the wrong. Especially if the guy had to be cut off. He wont be the first guy that woke up the next morning after a bender with bumps and bruises. Every weekend the best advice I give drunktards is to "shut your mouth and go home, this isnt going to end well for you if you dont leave right now". I say this as the cops are eyeing them getting ready to arrest them. Especially if its a slow night, if you're out and about and you stumble in front of a cop, you're going to the drunk tank. Struggle with them and its showtime like this dude in the 1st post. This is how it is all over North America. I wouldnt bother trying to change it lol

Where's martin and his GoPro when you need him? :)

On the bright side - if he was wasted enough to get booted out of that shithole, he wouldn't have felt his face getting cheese-gratered into the sidewalk.

I've been totally shitcanned and obnoxious there many times and they always keep feeding me beer. If you get cut off and start fighting, you're going to the drunk tank. And nobody goes to the drunk tank "gently".

Maybe he is known to the police and has a violent history with them. Who knows.
Have the Toronto cop check if dude files a complaint then get involved as a witness. Otherwise let it go.

Police dont take anyone down easily so i dont see how its abuse this time?

I saw the whole swat team thing go down, the guy never threatened anyone but himself, surrendered, and still had 5-6 cops throw him down, kneel on his back and cuff him. Its called protecting themselves.

Deaf has nothing to do with anything except the bar incident because of lack of communication.

I'll admit my bias -- I'm typically pro cop. There are certainly ones that have shown themselves to be less than perfect members of the force, but the whole 'drunk guy in a bar' is the main reason I'd never ever be a cop.

"Hi, we have some loon we can't control with our security, can you handle him". If the guy was so agreeable, then why did they feel the need to call the police.

Was not there, so they may have used more force than absolutely necessary, but deaf or not you should know when the police come to get on the ground and submit when they are arresting you. Fighting back will only serve them to offer up more force.

There is a way to avoid this altogether.. don't get so hammered you think an appropriate action when you don't agree with the price of beer is to take a swing at the management.

Most cops are a bunch of assholes in Halton region,
We had 2 show up at my shop looking for a former employee,
2 more showed up when i said i didnt know where this chap was,
Hadnt worked for me for over 2 years,
Beligerent and demeaning with no people skills,
I could imagine a guy with some drinks in him,
Freakin organized mob if you ask me.

I have the chest harness for it as well, I think I'm just going to start wearing it everyhwere like a special needs kid.

Which brings me to the next related point. Everyone in that bar had a smart phone with a 72MP camera that takes 1440p HD videos.

Where is the footage!? Some one filmed it. Someone films everything nowadays.... even red lights! (what loser does that?)

Start scanning youtube.

But I'm an attention whore. I'm more likely to go this route over google glasses.

If he sustained the laceration during the fall with security wouldn't that have caused his injuries. What further injuries did he sustained by the police? Where was the brutality? You describe that four officers took him down. Were the officers small? Were they woman? If initially they called 2 officers there and then two more arrived wouldn't that suggest that more help was needed with an intoxicated mentally Ill person.

Seems there is probably a bit more to the story. Guy takes a swing at manager and fights with security....I'm thinking he isn't going quietly with the police.

Were they woman?
You actually asked this question? really??????

Wow....

Ok so let's put the facts together
* guy gets plastered
* doesn't want to pay bar tab
* fights and hits a women that works there
* they figure out he's deaf, but the music is load everyone is deaf.
* bar security can't control guy
* cops get called told some drunk asshole, hit a women, security can't control him, doesn't want to pay his bar tab, he's deaf at the Ivy Arms.

I am sure when to cops get a call from "Ivy Arms" they just go full force. If "they" cut you off and their security can't control you. Your going down deaf or not.

Plus, we don't know the history on this guy. If he hit a women, a women he doesn't even know, a women who is just doing her job. Tends to tell me that this guy not such a nice guy, deaf or not. I understand he had trouble communicating with the women, but so do most drunk men sitting at a bar with loud music... (jk) I am sure he communicated just fine when he wanted a drink, and I am sure the staff understood he was deaf before he got plastered. A paper and pen is all he needed to communicate. Deaf people generally have this on them or will ask for this as soon as they start to have difficulty communicating. Maybe he really didn't want to communicate. Maybe he is just an asshole who got drunk and just happens to be deaf. Maybe he's been in trouble with the police in the past. Maybe the police know him very well. Just cause he deaf does not mean he's a nice guy, there are deaf assholes too.
I am not saying he's an asshole, I'm just saying try to find out some fact on this guy before you run to his rescue.
