A couple of things / ideas:

is she spayed? if not then she is in heat and better get that done or get used to it
did you pick her up from the humane society / rescue dog? if so, she might have been abused and is fearful of anyone / thing that is not you / your family?

I usually laugh at this option but if you have pet insurance it sometimes covers a behavioral specialist consult / visit. Never done it, but looks like it might be an option. They would provide possible reasons and better solutions. Should be able to setup something like that through your vet.

She was spayed at 6 months old and we don't have pet insurance (isn't that just weird??).
I think a good pet corrector bottle of compressed air will hopefully help. If it doesn't, I'll read about it right here on the Villager when someone complains

Spray yourself in the face with compressed air while trying to breathe. Let me know how that goes.

But why do you think she'll have a hard time breathing?? I don't understand what you're trying to say.

My dog used to do this when she was about 1 year old. I put here crate beside the back door. And every time I put her outside, I would wait for her to bark. As soon as she barked I would call her inside using my mean voice. Tell her "no barking, bad dog" and put her in her crate for 1/2 hour. It didn't take her long to figure out if she barked she got crated.

My neighbor has 15 German Shepherd's I never hear them bark. She says she has a thing that hangs in the tree's. If they bark, it gives off an annoying sound that they don't like. It seems to work, mind you her dogs are very well trained.

Why don't you simply go outside with the dog... you made the commitment to have a dog... go outside with it, and play around for a few minutes. Personally I always go outside with my two dogs.

justagirl...English Bulldogs are extremely stubborn.

Wyl...I do go into the backyard with them and I also take them to the dogpark and I also walk them. She's become territorial and it's annoying.

Consistent correction....get a 30 foot piece of nylon rope you can attach to the collar and when she is out side, EVERY TIME she barks, tell her "quiet" wait one second and give a stiff pop on the rope (A few pops for big stubborn dogs) and when she looks at you call her in with praise and treats. You do that constantly for a few weeks and she'll learn not barking is good (treats/praise) and you'll have the "quiet" command you can use whenever she starts to bark.

Just my two cents.

^^^ agreed. dog needs to know you are in charge. when you let it out, don't let it run out on their own. tell it to wait and then you give the command to let it out. once it starts to know you are in charge, they will calm down and start following your orders.

For the pet corrector, you don't spray it in their face. I just picked it up and sprayed it. The instructions are to aim away from dog and not directly at dog. It's the quick noise that comes out that makes it a deterrent.

The solution is fairly easy NIT..

Next time the barking starts get up, walk over to the screen door with a treat. Ask the pug to come to you ..when it comes close grab it by the scruff of the neck and say sternly 'You know how momma doesnt like to get off the couch when shes eating?!..I'm going to let you go now..and if you bark again..Mommas gunna punch you in your wrinkly little neck..you yappy little slinky.'

That 'll do it for sure and be stern...can't emphasize that enough.

Next question.

Hi New in town,

it sounds to me like a dog we used to have, We had a doberman with severe anxiety issues as well.

Spraying your dog with water and hitting or chasing him around will only make his anxiety worse than it is, unfortunately their is no cure or quick fix for a dog with high anxiety issues such as the issues you are speaking of.

You could try taking him to various dog trainers and obedience classes but from all the money we spent trying to resolves all our issues with our dog the classes did nothing.

Unfortunately in the long run we ended up having to give up on our dog and while we did exhaust every attempt to make him better our result was to see him off to a farm where he could run and exhaust himself.

Some of the tricks we tried that had a very short effect on him were shock collars and now you can even buy citronella collars that has the same effect as a shock collar, large kong toys filled with peanut butter or cheese whiz, or dog toys that he had to work to get the treats out, these were very temporary for him and once he got the treats he quickly returned to his old ways.

Best of luck to you and I hope your issues can get resolved before your neighbours become upset at you and call the town.

I also tried the Pet Corrector...you can get it at Mutt Life. I found that it worked on my dog at the beginning, but then she got angry at it and just barked at it. I also tried the nails in the can, but she barked louder. She is better now though...she tends to bark to fend off bad dogs, but I can usually figure out what the problem is....it's frustrating when you can't though!
