Hi Villagers and Rick,

I have noticed an issue around our fair community of Beaty where we have a little issue with Beavers in the pond/rain run off area on louis saint laurent between Vickerman and Kennedy. I walk my dog down this street daily and have noticed more and more that the beavers are taking down trees and dragging them into the water. I have even found where they call home (on Kennedy there is a little drive way down to the water, there is brush there... they live in the brush.) Anyhow, not sure what we can do about this, but the only trees left in the area are EverGreens, 90% of the rest have been taken down by these little critters. I wouldn't be surprised if they start crossing the side walk and start chewing the trees along the boulevard. So, is there anything we can do?

Town council, Rick specifically, views the presence of beavers as an indicator the town planners have done their job properly.

Probably easier and more humane to instead protect the existing trees around the area with some sort of beaver-proof barrier at the base. I see this sort of thing a lot at the Toronto Islands.

@Hodor

I get what you are saying and I am sure there are all sorts of benefits to them being in the area. My concern is the amount of trees they have already taken down and the damage they will continue to do. Anyhow, tree trunk barriers would work great and prevent them from doing more damage and not harm the animal. Something should be down soon though, as those beavers work fast and and are taking out trees that are between 5-10 years old.

In Calgary I saw lots of trees near the river where the city had installed a metal mesh around the base of the tree, from the ground to about 3-4 feet above the ground in order to stop the beavers from chewing the trees. Seems a lot easier, and more humane than trying to eradicate the beavers.

A similar example I found on google images, although these look plastic rather than metal:
