This is a quote from Colin Best's facebook page posted an hour ago.

Quote:
Just back from the Derry Road underpass project. CN Rail supervisor tells me that the new track is in place and being used by trains now. Crossing work underway with planking and paving to be completed tomorrow morning. Should be open BEFORE the Monday afternoon rush hours depending on the weather

So I'd be planning for lots of extra time in the morning tomorrow.

Just drive to Bronte if you take the go train. Got there quicker than I do when I take the Milton bus when the crossing is open. How sad is that.

Such a lack of communication in this town. Things need to drastically change in the future. Zeeshan, I think the councillors need to be privy to this information well in advance so that proper planning can be put in place. It is ridiculous that you found out at the same time as everyone else. Shutting down Derry road is a major decision without a lot of warning to people. Who was responsible for this decision and why did everyone get such short notice? Did the people that made this decision look at the big picture of the repercussions as to the timing of this and take everything into account? (e.g. LSL set to open in a few weeks and maybe it could be timed with that, Remembrance Day parade will cause the shutdown of Main street for a short while and cause further traffic nightmares, ambulances trying to get through, other construction projects going on in Milton that could affect Derry road being closed, etc.)

What a joke. Brilliant planning.

Zeeshan's constituency is the most effected by this closure. Knowing that this was coming, maybe he should have been much more proactive and insisted on timelines for the project so that people could be informed. It's very simple really, to formulate a plan to ease the pain that would have included posting on here long before the closure and placing large signs on Derry providing closure information at least 2 weeks prior to closing the road. This way people and businesses can plan ahead.

Frankly, the way this has been handled is disrespectful to the residence and all people effected. Disrespectful to families, to companies doing work in the area, to companies making deliveries to the area.

Some time ago - a clients joked - What's the definition of a crowd ? Answer - 3 people at the Derry Road construction site.

There was plenty of notice about this closure. I knew about it at least week before Zee posted here.

I'm pretty sure it was signage. Not sure if it was a specific one, or the flashing electronic one, or both. But there was notice.

I have an idea....

Instead of the cops sitting at the hole beside the tacks wasting gas and time, why not actually have them out doing something that could maybe help the community?

Call me crazy, but wouldn't a little traffic direction at Bronte/Main, or Steels/Tremaine or any one of the other f*** intersections be a better way for them to spend their days? That 20 minute lineup this morning to turn right onto steels from Tremaine was a real treat.

These guys have to be caught up on their e-mails and texts by now.....
I don't get it. Road construction all over the province and we feel the need to post 24 hour police to guard the tracks?
Are they doing anything that a sign can't do. What the hell is this costing us?

I was thinking the same thing this morning while again running by cars at a complete standstill, both at the roundabout and then on Main pretty much from Savoline all the way to Bronte. Why aren't the cops out there directing traffic? Or at the very least, couldn't the timing on the lights at Bronte/Main have been changed to allow more than a few cars through at a time?

And still no answer to my earlier question but I'm sure I'll find out today when/if the tracks actually open - will we be back to 2 lanes on each side, or at least 2 lanes on the busy side of the road during rush hour? It was brutal last week at rush hour, being only 1 lane in each direction. Not as bad as the last few days, but still annoying!

You are right about that. Maybe people should call our local police station at 905 878 5511 and ask why they are not doing that BUT, I guess it's over now. Hopefully Derry is open for the afternoon rush.

I was also thinking that some traffic direction at a few key intersections could have gone a long way to alleviate the situation this morning. I don't know that this something that HRPS would initiate on their own though in a non-emergency situation like this however. I would think it would need to come from the region or the town.

As far as the officer(s) stationed at the tracks, you don't understand the role of that police presence, if you think a sign could accomplish the same thing. When some pedestrian(s) or some of those famously bad (according to this forum) milton drivers decide the sign and road closure doesn't apply to them, who or what do you think will keep them from hurting or killing themselves? A sign? For you, for me, and for probably the vast majority of reasonable drivers and pedestrians in Milton, a sign will get the job done. But for those who would disregard the sign and fall into a hole or whatever - it takes more than a sign.

And of course, if there was only a sign there and there was some kind of accident, then everybody would be up in arms about how there should have been a police officer there, but the police were too busy handing out speeding tickets or something somewhere else. Come on, you know that's true...

Oh, and one more thing - by "something that could maybe help the community", what do you mean? I only ask because based on what you read on this forum, most things that I would consider as falling into that description are apparently viewed as "money grabs".
