I've got upstairs laundry which is obviously convenient but our brand new GE front load washer shakes/vibrates the entire house while it is on spin. We've tried changing the speeds, the amount of laundry, level, re-level, etc and nothing seems to help.

do others have this problem? I'm considering a new machine but I'm wondering if this is just an inherant problem with upstairs laundry.

Try adjusting the level at each corner of the machine.

You can also put a mat under the washer to absorb some of the shock.

If you haven't already done so, remove the four bolts that attach to your washing machine tub. The bolts are in place to prevent the tub from damage during shipping. Check your manual and/or call GE.

Make sure the shipping bolts aren't there. I would think its either the shipping bolts or the level. Did the washing machine come with foam pads?

we have 4 tennis balls under ours and you don't feel anything in the house.

First of all GE laundry sucks! Regardless what you do to it, it will still shake the house. I have a set and they are garbage. My suggestion is to get a new washer to replace the GE. Try LG or Samsung.

It is perfectly level. I've adjusted the level several times (even though its level) in an attempt to influence the vibration. No luck. Shipping bolts were removed. If you felt it shake you would know that a tennis ball or foam pad would do absolutely nothing.

most people I speak to say their front load washers vibrate and move accross the floor regardless of where they are in the house.

I'm guessing its a problem with the washer as it doesn't seem that others are having this issue with upstairs laundry....?

Excessive vibration can also be caused by overloading the washer or adding large bulky items

it is not normal for the washing machine to be moving across the floor. that is something I have never heard of before.

Installation procedure

Clean the floor under the pads. Then stick the adhesive discs to the floor. Apply the primer to the pads and press them onto the discs. Lift the washer back into place, locating the feet in the pad recesses.

It seems counterintuitive, but if your washer still vibrates even after being leveled, the solution is not to bolt it to the floor. That'll just make more noise. Instead of connecting the washer to the floor, you want to isolate it from the floor. The washer's rubber feet are supposed to do that. Unfortunately, at high spin speeds, they don't do a very good job.

That's where vibration isolation/dampening pads come in. Installers use these heavy-duty rubber pads under furnaces and blowers. One company makes a pad specifically for front-loading washing machines. The puck-shaped pads made by Good Vibrations Inc. get good reviews. You can buy a set of four from gviinc.net.

Installing the pads is a three-step process, and you'll need a helper for lifting the machine. Start by lifting each corner of the machine and slipping a pad under each foot. Mark each pad location on the floor. Then lift the washer out of the way so you can apply the adhesive discs and mount the pads to the floor as shown.

Similar product can be found at home depot, rona, lowes and probably any place that sells appliances.
