Would be nice if insurance companies gave winter tire users a break, or more of a break anyways. My current company, RBC, gives me nothing for having winter tires, but I have heard some companies give a little bit. However since insurance companies aren't in the business of giving anything up, at least charge people who don't have them more to offset the increases on the rest of us.

My insurance company gives a small break on having snow tires (The Personal).

I've heard (not sure on the validity) that winter tires are not good for wet road conditions; worse than all-seasons.
If this is true, then would it be recommended that I do not install my winter tires by this weekend, when we are expected to have warmer temperatures and heavy rain?

depends the temperature. all seasons pretty much turn hard as a rock when it goes cold. where the winters still retain the ability to flex and grip. in the wet, sometimes the tread pattern of the all season may be a bit better but the rubber compound may not grip as well as the winter even though it's moved the water away. tread pattern isn't everything.
when its cold out, dig your nail into an all season tire tread. then dig it into the winter tire. you'll see a huge difference on why a winter tire is better. its doesn't turn into a brick when cold.

Anyone else remembers when studded winter tires were the norm? Never had a problem with those babies.

Some truth to that statement. All tires have their pros and cons. On Consumer Reports Michelin X-Ice Xi3 and Xi2 are the top rated tires at 62 points. For snow traction and ice breaking it has the top excellent rating while for dry braking and wet braking it has the bottom poor ranking. Hydroplaning it is rated fair. The third ranked tire is Hankook i*cept evo which rates 60 points. For snow traction it rates second at very good and ice breaking is in the middle at good. However, for dry braking it rates two notches better at good and one notch better at fair for wet braking. It also rates very good for hydroplaning. I decided to purchase the Hankooks since the tradeoff for excellent snow traction and ice breaking with the Michelins is offset by the better wet and dry braking and hydroplaning performance. If I lived further up north then the Michelin X-Ice Xi3 would be more appealing to me.

Everything I've heard has said winter tires are better as long as the temp is lower than 7C. If you're not installing them yourself, you should just get them on ASAP as every garage has a 2 week wait these days.

I bought a set of tires from this website: quattrotires.com

Cheapest tires I could find by far, all brands. They don't seem to sell rims though. Shipping took 3 days and cost about $7.

Has anyone else used Quattrotires.com? Prices look solid, but I have never heard of them. Been hunting for Blizzak DM-V1's for my wife's CRV and they are out of stock most places, but have them here. Thanks!
